towbars and trailers

We supply and fit towbars to the 94/20 EC regulation that came into effect in Britain after 1st August 1998. Delivery available anywhere in the UK.

We stock the following brands:

EC94/20

EC94/20 applies to all new light passenger vehicles (NOT Commercial Vehicles) which have a European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (EWVTA) Certificate of conformity. Within the United Kingdom all vehicles with EWVTA first registered on or after 01/08/1998 requires a type approved EC94/20 towbar (for other European countries, please check with your local transport authority for date of implementation).

This legislation is referred to as 94/20/EC (Type Approval). The aim of this legislation was to provide a level playing field throughout the EC and allow free trade of motor vehicles and their components in all member states. Irrespective of where a towbar is manufactured, as long as it's EC94/20 approved the end user will know that it's been manufactured to a known technical and quality standard.

The approval consists of designing the towing bracket to locate all of the vehicle manufacturer's recommended fitting points and then testing the towbar through 2 million cycles after which the towbar must not show any signs of deformation or cracking whatsoever. Once approval has been granted, a unique authorisation number is allocated to the towbar of that design.

TOWING TIPS & HINTS

Before fitting a towing bracket it is important that you inspect the chassis and body shell for any corrosion, damage or misalignment of body panels. Any damage should be professionally repaired before fitting the towbar. All mating surfaces should be clean, free from corrosion, underseal and sound deadening materials. Any surfaces cleaned and prepared should be treated with a good quality zinc-rich primer.

MEASUREMENT OF NOSEWEIGHT

A positive noseweight is an important factor for pleasant towing. 50kg imposed weight on the towball is a good average; however consult your vehicle's handbook for the exact figure.

PRE-WELDED NUTS AND STUDS

The tolerance on the positioning of the vehicle manufacturers nuts and studs may be quite large and may mean elongating the holes in the towing bracket.

SHAKEPROOF WASHERS

These are supplied with all nuts. For correct fitting the nut is held still while the bolt is tightened to the correct torque setting. This allows the washer to bite into the metal and the nut to resist undoing.

NUMBER PLATES

Some vehicle number plates are positioned below the British standard. The plate must be moved so that it is not obscured by the towing equipment and illuminated in its new position. We can make up number plates for you from £8.99, contact us with your requirements.

STABILISERS

The stabiliser is a valuable addition to your towing peace of mind. The stabiliser will help to smooth out the effects of crosswinds and overtaking vortex from large flat-sided vehicles. However you should never rely on a stabiliser to iron out the faults on a badly loaded trailer, as this form of instability will reappear at an even higher speed. See our Caravan Accessories section for some stabilisers we have in stock.
